Poetry Group

poetry outloudThe church’s UU Poetry Group was founded in the spring of 2004 out of a belief that the way UU’s see the world is in many respects the way poets see the world—finding meaning in surprising connections and the universal in the details of the here and now. At that time our church had for many years strong programs in music and the visual arts, but no programs focused on literature.

The purpose of our group is to explore poetry by learning from each other. We invite anyone, even if only mildly curious, to join us. We meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the church library.

We usually open our meetings with a member reading a poem by a poet previously selected by the group for study over several meetings. After discussing this poem, others who have previously signed up read either a poem of their own or a published poem they want to share with the group. Readers bring copies so other members may read along. Other than those who have previously volunteered to read no preparation is required. Our meetings last about one and a half hours, which is usually long enough to discuss four or five poems.

Even though many of us read our own work and seek constructive criticism, we are not strictly speaking a writers group. In contrast to this type of group we talk about both substance and craft, encourage the full participation of those who are not writers and read poetry published by others.

Come and join us for the fun of it.
