Through the Partner Church Council of the Unitarian
Universalist Association, the Unitarian Church
of Barnstable is partnered with the Unitarian
Church of Almas, Transylvania, located in the
Homorod Valley. Transylvania (a region of present-day
Romania) is the birthplace of Unitarian theology
and the location of the very first Unitarian church
in the world, founded in 1568. The minister and
a delegation from Barnstable have visited our
Partner Church in Transylvania, and we have hosted
visiting Transylvanian ministers on several occasions.
There are many "pen-pal" relationships between
members of our two churches. We have supported
our Partner Church through the gift of two computers,
several shipments of used eyeglasses, shipments
of school supplies, and a cash gift, which allowed
them to remodel their church parish house. We
learn much from our Transylvanian Unitarian sisters
and brothers who have maintained their faith through
centuries of deprivation and oppression. It is
our hope that we can enhance their living situation
in some small way in return for their gift to
us of wisdom and inspiration.
